What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light devices use multiple wavelengths of light to correct a number of skin concerns effectively and safely. Dr. Harvey has vast experience in using IPL photofacials to address issues including:

  • Rosacea
  • Sun damage
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Vascular lesions
  • Freckles, age spots, and other spots of irregular pigment

During an IPL photofacial, your skin is cleansed, and a cool gel applied. The gel acts as a lubricant to help the IPL device glide smoothly over your skin and to reduce post-treatment reddening.

You wear dark glasses to protect your eyes as the device passes over your skin, deliver pulses of light that last about 2 seconds each.

Once the process is complete, your skin is cleaned, a soothing gel and sunblock applied and you’re sent on your way.

What are the benefits of IPL treatments?

IPL treatments are noninvasive and proven safe. They can also be individualized for each patient’s aesthetic concerns and goals. IPL is safe for Fitzpatrick skin tones I-IV. IPL should not be used for skin tones V or higher.

Do IPL treatments hurt?

You may feel a mild stinging during IPL treatment, similar to the feel of a rubber band snapping against the skin. You may request an anesthetic cream be applied to your skin prior to treatment to minimize discomfort.

What should I do to prepare for IPL treatments?

Prior to IPL treatments, be careful to protect your skin from the sun for 2-4 weeks at least. This means diligent application of sunscreen, avoidance of direct sun exposure, and no use of tanning beds.

What should I expect during recovery from IPL sessions?

Following IPL treatments, be careful to avoid the sun and zealously use sunscreen to protect your treated skin for several weeks. You may also be instructed to avoid:

  • Exfoliants, depilatories, and acne treatments
  • Very hot baths and showers as well as saunas
  • Chlorinated pools
  • Perfumes and scented soaps

Dr. Harvey provides comprehensive after-care procedures.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Most patients require 3-6 treatments scheduled about one month apart. Dr. Harvey recommends you plan on regular maintenance treatments once or twice per year to maintain your look.
