Hair Loss (Platelet-Rich Plasma - PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy utilizes your body’s own healing power to stimulate restoration of thinning hair and revitalization of your complexion. At Unique Dermatology & Wellness Center in Valrico, Florida, Dyan Harvey, DO, was the first in the area to introduce PRP treatments to men and women looking to resolve unwanted hair loss and dulling skin. What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelets, along with red and white blood cells, and the liquid plasma make up your blood. Platelets are known for their clotting and healing ability.

To make PRP, a small sample of your blood is spun down in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelet count. The resulting compound is rich in cytokines and growth factors that offer a natural way to stimulate cell turnover and growth.

How does PRP help with hair loss?

When injected into places of thinning or lost hair on the scalp, PRP stimulates the hair follicles to start regrowing hair. You notice decreased shedding and improvement in the texture and thickness of existing hair within two weeks after treatment. You may also notice the beginning of new hair growth.

It takes 3-6 months from the first treatment to get substantial results and more lustrous locks. Anyone with thinning hair can benefit, but PRP is especially beneficial for those with early hair loss or androgenic alopecia.

Your improved head of hair lasts for 18-24 months, but regular touch-up treatments about once a year help you maintain your look.

What is PRP for the skin?

PRP is effective in treating damaged skin as it helps create volume, stimulate collagen production, smooth and tighten skin, and create a winning glow. PRP can also enhance the lips and cheeks.

Dr. Harvey may recommend you use PRP for:

  • Erasing lines and wrinkles
  • Diminishing the appearance of acne scars
  • Lifting sagging skin
  • Brightening dull, lackluster complexions
  • Plumping thin lips

In just a few in-office treatment sessions, you experience a positive change to your appearance and come away feeling and looking younger.

What should I expect during PRP skin treatments?

Each treatment for the skin lasts less than an hour and you see results in three to four sessions.

A technician from Unique Dermatology & Wellness Center draws your blood and prepares the PRP. Prior to the administration of the PRP, you receive a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Dr. Harvey then applies the PRP with micro-injections to the desired treatment areas.

Do PRP hair and skin treatments require downtime?

Downtime following PRP treatment is minimal. You may need about 24 hours to fully recover and assume all regular activities, but rarely longer. Dr. Harvey can explain what you should expect after treatment and how to care for treated areas to maximize your results.
