Of all of the methods of skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion is one of the gentlest and most effective. Created to resurface and perfect the skin, microdermabrasion, as the name indicates, mildly abrades and removes the thicker, uneven outer layer of dead and damaged skin cells, leaving a clear new surface that looks more youthful, smooth and glowing.

At Unique Dermatology & Wellness Center, Dr. Dyan Harvey uses the Excelladerm Microdermabrasion system to smooth and polish her patients’ skin. As a highly skilled cosmetic dermatologist, she is committed to making all of her patients feel better about their skin.

How Microdermabrasion Works

The microdermabrasion system propels and then vacuums a jet of fine crystals across the skin’s surface, removing dead and damaged cells in the process. The stream of fine crystals serves to gently abrade the skin, simultaneously stimulating the production of collagen. These actions have the effect of improving dull, uneven skin color and refining pores.

Conditions Treated by Microdermabrasion

Dr. Harvey uses many different techniques to rejuvenate the skin. During your initial consultation with her, she will carefully evaluate your skin tone and texture, as well as the skin problems that are bothering you, and present you with your best options. Microdermabrasion is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Dull complexion
  • Age spots
  • Melasma (patches of dark skin)
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne and acne scars

Microdermabrasion is known to stimulate your collagen production. Collagen is the protein in your skin that keeps it looking taut and smooth. Collagen diminishes as you age, so when microdermabrasion increases its production, the procedure results in giving you a more youthful complexion. Put simply, microdermabrasion turns back the clock a bit on skin that has been through normal rites of passage — acne, aging, sun damage, weight changes (e.g. pregnancy), and scarring.

How does a microdermabrasion treatment feel?

When you undergo a microdermabrasion treatment, you will feel vibrations against your skin and then sense the suction device removing your superficial dead skin cells. You may experience the latter as a gentle kind of scratching. The process is not painful, but your skin may be slightly red and a bit more sensitive than usual for a few hours after treatment. Typically, a moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied to calm and protect the area after the procedure.

How long does a microdermabrasion treatment last?

Each treatment will last about a half hour. One of the great advantages of a microdermabrasion treatment is there is no downtime required after treatment. You can go about your business immediately. How long the effects of the microdermabrasion treatment are visible varies from person to person, depending on your age, the severity of your skin damage, and the number of treatments you receive. In most cases, patients undergo a series of six weekly to biweekly treatments at first and then cut back to a treatment every one to three months to maintain the benefits in their appearance.
